TV Series Review: DEXTER – Season 6 (2011)
DEXTER continues to be an awesome, boundary pushing show that amazes and leaves the viewer in shock every time. Season 6 is no different.
After the initially resolved ending of Season 5, Season 6 is a chance to start a completely new storyline without baggage of the past 5 Seasons. And so it does. The overall theme this season is, of all things, Religion. This is something Dexter has to deal with from a few perspectives.
Some of the reasons DEXTER is awesome is simply due to the philosophical demons which Dexter himself has to fight through out the Seasons. This Season, Dexter struggles with spirituality and God, some of which is hilarious to witness on screen. Add to this the awesome talents of Edward James Olmos and Colin Hanks as the guest stars this season… and you’ve got amazing TV.
Olmos and Hanks play the villains this season, as misguided and basically fucked up Religious Extremists, committing graphic displays of murder in order to bring about the Apocalypse. Obviously, like always the Miami PD is investigating and Dexter catches their scent, and it’s a cat and mouse thing through out the season.
What’s different this season, is Dexter actually questions his spiritual side and his typical reflections do a lot deeper. Not to mention his relationship with his sister, Deb comes under closer scrutiny as she starts unraveling after being promoted to Captain of Miami PD.
DEXTER is amazingly complex, and each Season goes for broke as they lay it all out on the table. Nothing is held back or left for later. Each Season also carefully follows a certain theme to be explored throughout. This season, Edward James Olmos is pitch perfect as the amazingly cold villain, who thinks he’s following God’s path while doing fucked up things due to it.
Colin Hanks is awesome in his role, which starts out somewhat typical, but takes off after the 2nd half of the Season. It’s incredibly refreshing to see both these actors on the screen after a long time, and kicking ass while doing so.
As usual Dexter himself is in fine form, dishing out an amazing performance of a spiritually conflicted serial killer & father. Everything about Season 6 works, mostly because the Writers start with a clean slate, without the tension and baggage of the Previous 5 Seasons. It’s a time to start fresh and rope in the new viewers, and DEXTER does just that… except for the cliffhanger in the Season Finale!
